The Memoirs of Constantine Darkstar
Palanthas and it is my final day of testing to become an apprentice of the Wizards of High Sorcery. I am one of three students about to sit the last exams. The other two I am with are not to be trusted, which is sad as it seems things never change. The theory side of things is done and today we put the theory into practice.
1st and 2nd Tests – we have a target each – I cast magic missile and then minor illusion to pass the first two. On the 3rd test I once more cast magic missile and complete these tests with flying colours. We then head to the last room for the final test. Surfana, then Duriifra Reialn go before me. Surfana comes out and does not look happy, while Duriifra appears to act as if nothing happened. I go in and see that the last test is to use a scrying crystal to locate a ‘hidden rune’ in the Great Library of Korval. This seems straight forward but as I get close to the library I stop and realise that there is a magically shield over the library would have stopped me, but as I see it is there I pass this test!
But as I watch the scene changes and the library changes back to a time before or during the Chaos war; What is going on??? And then I see a vision…
Vision of the Past
- I see Korval but it is from the past. A Chaos army is attacking the city
- A mysterious wizard is blasting everything from the top of the tower in front of the old library.
- Then the scene changers and I see Chaos himself standing at the gate of the city shooting a beam of magical power straight at the wizard.
- I intuitively realise that the wizard is Alexi Goldenscale!
- While he and Chaos are firing magical beams at each other, I see there is a portal of some kind behind Alexi
- Alexi is drawing power from the portal – the power is coming out of it, flowing through Alexi and straight back at Chaos. (I believe this is combined godly power)
- Even with the extra ‘power’ from the portal, Alexi is losing.
- Alexi then starts to glow and then I am blinded as a massive beam of light flies back at Chaos and sears off his hand!
- Though hurt Chaos stands up while Alexi is lying on the top of the tower but he has changed.
- Chaos says it is time to die and steps through the city and is about to slam his good hand down and squash Alexi when Alexi says ‘Now!’
- And then the world moves and Chaos sucked down into the earth and is gone. This is when the world moved and ended the Chaos War
- I will remember this memory forever as it is imprinted in my mind.
Master Gryffindor was blasted backwards during the ‘vision’ and eventually comes around with me looking down at him. He then says I must not speak of what just happened to ANYONE at all as what we saw should not have been possible as it was the past! The past is locked and sealed away since the world moved at the end of the Chaos War. I do add that the test was recognising the shield over the library, so I did pass the test. He says I am to head back to the classroom and wait for us to be called to the Graduation Ceremony as it seems we all passed. I was awesome though.
After 30 mins a voice says we must all head to Graduation Ceremony and as I arrive I just ‘know’ something is wrong and I am about to be screwed over. Surfana is given top of class (load of rubbish) and she chooses the Red Robe. And then Duriifra is said to have finished second?!? WHAT!!!! He is a smug little shit and chooses the plum apprenticeship at the Tower in Palanthas. And then Master Gryffindor talks to the person in charge and then the ceremony is over and the wizards all file out. Some of them are looking at me like I have screwed up and will be let down gently or just kicked out; Pricks!
With everyone gone except myself and Master Gryffindor I say ‘I was the top student’ and this is confirmed by Master Gryffindor. He then says that my vision was something no one would expect. I say ‘so that was Alexi Goldenscale fighting Chaos at the time of the world moving’. Master Gryffindor has a heart attack that I was able to work out exactly what the vision was about (it was not that hard – seriously). Master Gryffindor adds that Alexi Goldenscale has not been seen since that day.
He then adds that the reason I was not given top of class was because others would see the vision recording and that cannot happen until after he talks to Master Palin Majere. Hmmm I can understand that logic but no one else knows the truth at the moment… Master Gryffindor then hands me a letter and says that the ‘second’ apprenticeship option is something that I might find of great interest.
I love the idea of this apprenticeship; a chance to see the world and practical study – I also want to go to get away from this place as I am still NOT happy with what has happened as it was beyond my control. My anger is real and if one of my two (smug) fellow graduates try to speak to me I might ‘hurt’ them. I think Master Gryffindor is still surprised I understand the vision so much; I am not an idiot but I do understand the importance of it all. Still not happy though. I accept the position and head back to my residence.
Here I advise Jarvis of what is about to happen and I write a note to the family saying I am off on my apprenticeship – Jarvis will see that it is delivered.
Father \ Mother
I hope you are both well and I am sure that the Family’s interests are doing very, very well. Things have taken an ‘interesting’ turn here, but I have passed my test and become an apprentice of the White Wizards. I will make you and Father proud and if I see anything that might interest the business I will let you know.
Your Loving Son
That evening I collect my items and then am up early the next day and head to the teleport hub. These ‘hubs’ can take you all over the Lands of Light as long as you have a ticket. I arrive and head to the third level for the portal to Caergoth. Just as I step through the portal, the mage I handed the ticket to says something like ‘wait, what?’ Not my concern of course as I am now in Caergoth and head out looking for the Golden Dragon Inn.
I arrive at the inn and go in and talk to the Dwarven Barkeep as the letter says. I say the code phrase and I am then lead upstairs to a room and meet Master William Garnot (the Garnot family come from Northern Solamnia near the Goldenscale lands). He is very happy to meet me and we discuss business – Tomorrow we are going to the Council of Light and I have to learn a spell before we go – (all I heard was Council of Light!) and I follow him into a room full of ‘goodies’. He goes to a desk, presses a location and a panel slides opens and he pulls out a Ritual Spell Book – William says it is a Garnot Family heirloom.
I am to learn the first spell in the book in 4 hours (but they normally take 8 hours… hmmm). We have lunch and I hear about the dragon in the ice. The Dragon was called Golden Heart and is (he believes) now on the Isle of Dragons – Garnot speaks in Draconic to me and I reply and then after lunch go to my room and ‘read from the book’ – it glows and I get the spell “Alarm 2.0” copied to my spell book after 4 hours. This is an awesome spell!!!!! What else is in this book?!?!?! (My Precious…)
After finishing I head back out and talk to William and meet ‘Ralfie’ – Ralfie is a blink dog and William says to follow Ralfie downstairs to meet the other person involved in the group. In the tavern open room I meet Viktor; he is a human and is drinking Dwarven ale (which is interesting); mead for me. Viktor Petrovich is from Southgate – and during out chat I discover Viktor has a bit of a problem with magic as we are travelling via portal from here to Sancrist Isle. Interesting…
Then Theodora comes down the stairs – she is all airs and graces – I do not know who she is until Viktor says it is the Fish wife. Theodora is a beauty but from what Viktor has said a very dangerous female (though aren’t all of them? But I would not throw her out of my bed). She joins us and then sees Viktor and is not amused. She confirms that we are travelling direct to Sancrist Isle so we can get permission to go to our dig site. We will then travel direct from Sancrist Isle to a place close to our final destination.
I explain that I am after ‘Knowledge, Magic and the Truth’ (though the truth refers to my vision and what happened to Alexi Goldenscale – I do not mention that). Viktor says that the Petrovich’s are from the north. I do not recognise the family name but I take note of this. Viktor heads back to the room we are to share to sleep while I finish up my meal.
I keep the ritual book on me (just in case). Upstairs I see Ralfie asleep outside Theordora’s room which means William must be in the other. I head to bed – nothing happens that night and I get up and study my spells feeling refreshed and Theodora bangs on the door saying ‘get up’. Viktor does and opens the door naked; seems he sleeps in the nude. I get all my gear, eat breakfast and head downstairs where we are to load everything on to the wagon we are to take with us.
Seems one chest is ‘evil’ or ‘tainted’ as Viktor says there is something wrong with it as he put it on the wagon. I can tell that it is magical but it is ‘off’. Not sure why. Viktor then pulls out some googles William gave him (they are magical) and I put them on and look at things and I see their auras… The chest, horses, Viktor, Theodora… Well, well, well. VERY interesting!
The chest has a black heart and a thin white shield keeping the evil in the chest at bay. Horses are grey which I think means Neutral. Most people are grey to white that I can see and then I look at Viktor; he is blank except for the emerald green ring that is coloured in a black and white world. VERY interesting (my new saying) seems the ring has a masking spell of some kind on it. I ask Viktor about the ring and he says his Aunt Polgara gave it to him – I explain the ring hides Viktor and he then takes the ring off and Viktor’s aura is white and then 50 shades of grey. It is best if Viktor keeps the ring on.
I am white according to Viktor and I realise that Viktor is not happy that he is ‘50 shades of grey’ and he thinks he has something ‘not nice’ in him. VERY interesting… Viktor adds that if he did not have the ring on bad mojo would have happened when he moved the chest – I am inclined to agree.
William is paranoid about the chest and everything else that is going on but we keep the aura and ring information a secret just between Viktor and myself. We head to the hub and Viktor has no problem getting us there. We go around to the back of the tower and are raised up on a vastly improved floating disk spell to the second floor. William hands over a money bag and we get a portal summoned and arrive in Sancrist.
We arrive; I vomit and Viktor vomits (as a result) all over Theodora – I quickly cast prestidigitation and clean everything up just in time to stop Theodora killing Viktor. It is also very quiet here but we eventually see elves, dwarves and gnomes all heading in the same direction as us. Theodora can speak elven as she calls Viktor a rude word (which I later explain to Viktor).
It is 9.00am when we arrive near the famous Whitestone Glade and we can see that and people have setup tents around the area, but we take the cart straight through to the audience stands. The area around the glade is a very lush green and we see the Whitestone. The stone is not as large as it once was and there are seven smaller stones around it. There is something strange about the middle stone. There is additional seating behind all the different 7 stones \ groups. Thanks to the goggles I can see that the pillar in the centre is alive with magic and that there is an energy ley-line going from the smaller stones to the large pillar – the Whitestone pillar is being juiced up.
It takes me around 5 minutes to cast the Alarm 2.0 spell in the five locations as discussed – this will give us the warning we need. People arrive and other wizards go around and cast the alarm spells like I just did but they did not check for the ones I cast! Amateurs…
The Council of Light Representatives Start to Arrive
- Knighthood Grand Master
- Paladine Representative
- Lord Quinn and Lady Natasha Goldenscale – Also High Justice and Dragon Highlord
- High Clerist – Knight of Sword
- Knight of Crowns
- Rest of the Seven Representatives.
- The Lucinda the Red and Garan the Black from the Tower in Palanthas arrive last.
Then the attack happens – a Black Mage Guard of Garan the Black teleports (probably a ring as i did not see a spell cast) and kills the White Robe that tired to put up a barrier to protect the Whitestone Glade. Doers of Evil (I like that!) teleport in and an Insane Black Robe Female appears and kills Lord Caesar (Crown High Warrior) and laughs as if what she had just done was a party trick.
Because of my Alarm spells going off we had 6 seconds of warning; I say (loudly) that all hell is about to break loose as Demons and more Black Mages appear (boo hiss) with a Blue, Green, Black and Red Dragons flying overhead. The attack begins in earnest. Other ‘Doers of Evil’ (or is it chaos worshipers?) teleport in and an Insane Black Robe Female appears and kills Lord Caesar (Crown High Warrior) and laughs as if what she had just done was a party trick.
William, Theodora, Viktor and I are forced to fight a Black Robed Wizard and his summoned zombies while the central ‘wizards’ or mastermind near the Whitestone is casting some necrotic spell (in my opinion) while overhead Lord Quinn is flying on a Gold Dragon (the dragon was Lady Natasha! I have so got to talk to them now).
Unfortunately, even though we manage to stop the zombies and kill the wizard in front of us (grease and fire is good and Viktor is deadly with the Great Maul he carries) the attackers complete whatever their mission was and start to disappear, though none of the evil dragons escape as Lord Quinn and his Dragon has killed them all.
In the aftermath I look through the goggles and see that the ground under the Whitestone is ‘dead’ and William says we must gather some of the dirt from the ‘dead’ area under the white stone. We do this and now we wait…
One thing I did notice during the battle was the fact that Viktor understood the language (Abyssal) that the Demons were speaking in to the other black robes.
Oh Viktor where is your Family from… I really do think we need to find Alexi Goldenscale – he might be able to help with Viktor’s ‘problem’ and I love a good mystery!
Whitestone – The Aftermath
With the dirt collected it is time to see just how badly the forces of Light have fared. I take the dirt and place it in a ‘special’ box that has a box in box (steel) and place it inside as William orders. I then padlock the little box and then place a lock on the big one and take it back to the wagon. William then places this box in the wagon nowhere near the ‘evil’ box and he asks me to go get Viktor and help him get the horse hitched up. I do not need to as Viktor speaks to the horse and the horse comes to him. Very Interesting
I look at the Whitestone as there is something ‘strange’ about it. I put on the goggles and can see that the top of the Whitestone is white and as I look down it the colour goes grey, then black and then nothing – it is blank (like Viktor with the ring). A mystery!
We are delayed in leaving as Theodoria has left her ‘favourite’ crossbow behind (seriously) but she eventually returns to the wagon so we head towards the Castle of the Grandmaster. Viktor bypasses the fools that are still running from the Whitestone and we arrive at a fork in the path, where we head right to the town looking for the Silver Dragon Inn.
Word has spread but it is calm here in town – on the right hand side of the road is the Silver Dragon Inn. William says we are staying here overnight (are we are still looking for permission for the expedition?) but no it is so he can check some things. I explain to William about what I saw with the Whitestone – the colours white, grey, black and blank and William does think he knows what has happened to the Whitestone but needs time to check; he also looks worried. We enter the inn and William takes in dirt crate while Viktor the ‘evil’ one; we then do three trips up and down the stairs with crates to the room William is staying in (just to be on the safe side). William tells the best BS story to Derek the innkeeper and says we are staying the night – 3 rooms are available.
Viktor and I are in a room and Theodoria has a room with Ralfie. On the last trip upstairs we see a group of dwarves at one table and some human nobles at another, but on opposite side of the taproom. Upstairs we place the last of the crates and William says we have a job – Viktor helps set up a contraption with Theodoria and I go with William. He passes me a pipe, a bag full of ‘herbs’ and a stool and says I am to pour some ingredients into the pipe, take a deep breath and blow it at the door and then place the pipe on the stool. I sense that the pipe is magical (faint), move over to the door, take a deep breath and blow; little bubbles come out and I place the pipe on the stool. Some kind of dampening magic or maybe anti-scrying magic, but I am not completely sure.
Theodoria and Viktor assemble the stand so William can examine the items we found. He pours sand into a chalice, takes a goblet and dagger and then cuts his palm (Blood Magic?) and pours the blood into the chalice. Theodoria offered to use her blood but William says NO! He then asks us to stand at the eastern and western compass points, while Theodoria and William are at the northern and southern points. He adds that we ‘might’ see things but they should not hurt us. Should not hurt us?? Hmmm and Viktor does not look happy.
We put our arms out with the palms in and then William throws the sand (now coloured red) and it flies into the area between us and goes around in a circular motion. And then we get visions!
- Everything fades away and I am looking down on a chamber with a large table. Seated at the table is a young Alexi, a Red Robe woman (Jenna) and two Black Robed Mages – a male (Miles) and his wife.
- They talk about how the following people have passed the testings – 10 White Robes, 34 Black Robes and 1 Red Robe. Melinda took the Ergothian mages into the Red Robes of the Order.
- Alexi is High Mage. Justaries and Miles approved the plan that Alexi came up with (I wonder what that was?)
- Dalamar is second in power of the Black Robes and then in storms a Red Robe mage; Melinda.
- Jenna stands and moves aside for Melinda and then Melinda rants at Alexi
- You are so clever Alexi – I know what you did and you will pay for this.
- Redegar broke your nose 30 years ago – and lots of laughing.
- Your actions are not a secret since coming to lead the Red Robes and then she storms out
- Tomorrow will be a messy day says Alexi
- Miles asks one more question – ‘Who will succeed you as Master of the White Robes?’ and Alexi says ‘It will be, should be Palin’.
I realise as the vision is ending that the ‘wife’ of Miles looks a lot like Theodoria! That means that this is Theodoria’s mother and Miles is her father! William is Miles’s brother – this is Miles Garnot! This mystery is getting better and better!
I wonder what Viktor’s vision was… hmmm
The visions are over but Theodoria has a fit and William asks me to grab a jar with a potion in it that calms her and puts her to sleep. We have a better chance now of working out what has happened with the dirt because of the spell he just casts. But I keep the vision I saw a secret, for now.
Viktor is to go down into the tavern and find out information – Theodoria will go down later while I will help with the investigation of the dirt. Viktor goes downstairs to chat and look around
Theodoria wakes up but cannot remember what happened and William gets her to go downstairs to find out information – the potion is good stuff as Theodoria is being agreeable and nice! William explains that we are going to do some tests on the dirt and we open the box – I have gloves as does he; I have to place a ring around the pile of dirt that William pours on to a flat piece of steel – but nothing happens. William then says that I am to try and detect magic – I use the goggles as well and it is like looking at anti-life or anti-magic. I use my arcane knowledge and get nothing at all magical from the dirt. William sees what I am doing and has a fit. He then says to get out the book and he touches it and says go to page 3.
I get to learn a new spell which is Detect Magic 2.0 and it is amazing!
- Passive check – not trapped but has a magical aura
- Active check – necromancy school – draining essence – the dirt is dead – really dead! It should be nothing at all! No life force.
William grabs the gloves and tongs and drops a coin on to the dirt – the coin disintegrates. He then grabs one of his magical crossbow bolts and does the same – the bolts sparks and disintegrates as well!
He then goes over to a chest and pulls out a vial of healing water from the elven isle – the dirt hisses and starts to become ‘alive’ – the goggles let me see the dirt ‘reappear’ and once the water is gone the dirt returns to the way it was.
Where is the essence sucking the life to? Chaos? Could Chaos return? Is it a plan by the Dark Queen to stop the Good Gods returning? Another mystery!
This effect seems to be permanent. Why did they kill the High Warrior – something is not right.
Viktor talk to the Dwarves in the taproom and Theodoria the nobles and knights.
Theodoria comes back upstairs and says that noble downstairs is the Lady in Waiting to the Grand Master’s wife – there is a State of Emergency – contact has already been established with the Province of Neutrality. The nobles did not have much more to say. The knights say that the Lords of Darkness have been having skirmishes with the western forces of the Knights. Theodoria does not have a high opinion of the Knighthood.
Why are the Knights ‘up themselves’ asks Viktor – the Crown Knights are new and not corrupted to the ways of the Knight Hood. Theodoria does not have any love for the Knights.
Could the Knights be responsible for the death of her parents?
She also heard that the Grand Master of the Knight’s will be having a gathering of Light to talk about plans moving forward from here. The dwarf cleric follows Mishacal and this leads to Caleb the leader of the Priest of Mishacel. Appears that Sturm Majere is here as well and is in charge of the Knights now on the Isle – Grand Masters brother. One more thing – there are mages everywhere – White, Red and Black Robed Mages – What is going on?? William is freaking out? What is going on?!
William adds that we have to leave sooner rather than later. We will soon be discovered and we cannot let the Black Robes get a hold of that chest. Or Viktor or the ring he wears in my opinion.
Tomorrow Theodoria, Viktor, Ralfie and myself will go looking for a rare flower – the Lavender Marigold – I know what the flower is – it used in extremely powerful and rare spells – wish and gate spells. The flower can also be substituted for other spell components; grab as many as we can but we need at least one. Only grows in one location and is guarded by kobolds. Even Knights have trouble with them if they are not careful. Kobolds are not very common so this will be interesting. There is a White Robe in the teleport area that finds William sexy and he can bribe her with a flower.
William gives us jars (between the three of us – I have 4) that we put the flowers into. We will leave early in the morning. I scribe the Detect Magic 2.0 spell into my spell book!
I do think that since I have never seen him cast a spell I think William is an alchemist or a Blood Witch. No wonder he does not want to be ‘talked to’ by the Knights and Mages and I do not want to talk about the spells I cast! But if the Wizards get too close they will take a closer look at Viktor and that might be bad. Viktor is a mystery and i am the one to work it out, not the Tower of High Sorcery!
The Game is Afoot!
